Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different pins for the connector and they have different functions but the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors are not firing anymore. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must be aware of the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. To accomplish this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to an engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. If you have any of these issues it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and requires audi a3 replacement key. The good news is that they are very affordable and easy to find particularly in the case of an Bosch model, which is what we have. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your vehicle. It's an essential component of your audi a1 car key's transmission, as it sends information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is spinning. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points.
