This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two connector pins, and they have different functions but the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The audi car key holder will start if the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of fuel injectors, etc. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause an engine shut down.

A failing G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. The good news is they are very affordable and easily accessible particularly when you're looking at the Bosch sensor, like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues within your vehicle.
