How to Replace Window Panes

A cracked Window replacement glass pane can cause a lot of trouble. It could also be a chance to upgrade your glass to energy-efficient or insulated windows, and reap benefits like more comfort, higher the value of resales and lower utility bills.

You can do it yourself at less than what it would cost to hire an expert. It requires the right tools and an hour or two of your time.

Glass

If your single pane windows are old broken, deteriorating or damaged replacing them with more modern glass that is tempered or insulated will increase energy efficiency and decrease noise while also preserving the historical integrity of older homes. The procedure of replacing windows is simple and can be done by homeowners with basic hand tools. You'll also require a replacement window pane, glazier's tips, pliers, and latex glazing putty. If necessary, you can use a heatgun to warm the old putty. Before starting, wear gloves and safety goggles as working with broken glass could cause injuries.

Begin by removing any remaining broken pieces of glass. It is best to use pliers for this however, a flathead may be useful equally. Use a wood chisel, or putty knives to remove any remaining old putty around the frame and window sash. Be careful to not damage the window sash. Take your time and work slowly. This should be done on a ladder, not on the ground. Also, ensure that someone below the sash hold it steady.

After you have removed all the old putty, prepare the window frame to accommodate the new pane. Measure the width and height of the sash opening by subtracting 1/8 inch from each measurement (to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction). Take these measurements to the nearest hardware store or home center, and find a piece glass cut to size. Alternately, you can cut the glass yourself, if you have the appropriate tools.

After installing the new glass Apply caulking on the edges. This will make the glass weatherproof. Install a glazier's pointing on both sides of the frame. This will secure the pane. The points shouldn't be too tight that they cause friction between the frame and sash but they shouldn't be too loose.

Before applying the putty on the surface, knead thoroughly until it is soft and free of lumps. Make it into pencil-sized strips. The first strip should be glued to the frame's corner. Work from corner to corner to ensure it's even and smooth.

Glazier's Points

The glazier’s points are small triangular pieces of metal that help secure the glass into the window frame without damaging the delicate surface. Knowing how to use these tiny pieces of help is simple and could save you money on a professional installation or the cost of buying new glass.

After taking off the old putty, glazier points as well as any remaining remnants Clean the frame thoroughly with an utility knife. Lightly sand the wood into the rabbet grooves, if necessary, to smooth out rough areas. If you sand wood protect it with painter's tape to prevent accidental damage.

Apply a thin layer glazing compound to the rabbet grooves and edges of the glass. This will seal and protect the edges. Allow it to dry and cure completely.

After the glazing compound dries and the glazing compound is dry, you can install the new window sash. First, coat the wood with an even layer of linseed. This will keep the new putty from sucking in the moisture and deteriorating and cracking with time. Apply this coat with a brush or the edge of your putty knife, then use the chisel, or the back end of the knife to gently press the new sash and glazier's point into the grooves of the rabbet. Repeat this procedure every 10 inches along the perimeter of the frame.

Putty

A baseball thrown or a rock thrown in error or a branch falling could result in a broken or cracked window pane. Luckily, most windows can be replaced by simply putting a new piece in the proper place. The glass is held in place using a small metal clip called a glazier's point and putty, often called glazing compound. Before you install a new pane, first take out the old one and clean the area with a rag and the pull-type paint scraper or the wood chisel. Wear protective glasses and gloves when working. You'll need a heating gun in the event that the window is glued into the frame.

If you are planning to install your original sash, you must remove the mold that holds the old pane. Sand the sash until it's flat and ready for new caulk. Once the sash is installed and sanded, apply a fresh silicone caulk to the glass to ensure it won't leak or discolor as time passes.

Take the glazing points out of the rabbets, the grooves in the sash, where the glass is. If they're hard to chisel out, you can try holding the hand tool, such as a heat gun over them to soften them up first. If you're using a heating gun, be cautious not to cause damage to the railings of the sash or the sash itself by placing the tool too close.

After the old points of glazing and putty have been removed, make a bed for the new pane. Roll a piece of glazing compound between your hands, shaping it to be about 1/2-inch thick. Place it into the rabbets, where the glass will be put. You might be worried about replacing a broken pane of glass. However, replacing one glass pane does not need to cost a fortune If you can do it yourself. In fact windows with double glazing window replacement panes can be replaced for less than the cost of an expert.

If you're working with large glass windows first ensure it is securely attached to the frame. With the right tools and techniques to accomplish this task fairly easily and speedy.

When you are ready to begin, remove the old window pane. Pry out the metal glazing points that are attached to it. They are basically tiny metal triangles that function as "nails" that keep the window in place in the wood frame.
